Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford began performing in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
